The weekend of 24-25 May 2014 saw IWM Duxford stage its D-Day
Anniversary Air Show, paying tribute to the airmen who flew over Normandy in
support of Operation OVERLORD with a comprehensive flying programme featuring
many aircraft linked to the invasion, including several veterans of the
conflict. Elliott Marsh reports for GAR.
Assembling a flying programme predominantly
structured around either genuine D-Day veterans, of which eight were in
attendance, or aircraft representative of key OVERLORD types, the IWM certainly
did well to portray the many facets of the Allied airpower in 1944, with
representatives of British and American bombers, transports, fighters,
reconnaissance and liaison aircraft participating, as well as modern day
gliders and parachutists paying tribute to the airborne forces which dropped
into Normandy on the night of 5/6 June.
