NZ5485 BuNo.57473 was shipped from the USA on October 4 1944, assembled and given the code “485” and named “Kohimarama IX”. The aircraft belonged to RNZAF servicing units and were loaned to squadrons for operations.

In August 1945 the aircraft was with No.23(Ghost) Squadron based at Emirau, St. Matthias Islands. Previously NZ5485 was with No.16 and No.14 Squadrons. In October 1945 the aircraft was ferried to New Zealand and put up for sale. On March 2 1948 it was sold to a civilian.

Mitsubishi F-2A 03-8505 c/n 1005 number 505 was delivered on December 15, 2000 to the J.A.S.D.F 8th SQ, 3rd AW and their Mitsubishi F-2 aircraft are stationed at Misawa Air Base, Aomori Prefecture, Honshu. The squadron is known as the “Black Panthers”. 

Misawa Air base was built in 1938 and is the only joint service installation in the western Pacific region for both Japanese and American military services. Misawa is also the headquarters for the JASDF Northern Air Defense Force.
