VMO(CVS)-351 became VMF-351 in February 1945 and
provided aerial cover for minesweeping and
bombing missions in the East China Sea. Aboard the USS Gloucester VMF-351 took
part in the Battle of
Okinawa from April to June 1945.
On July 23, 1945 Lt. Col. Donald K. Yost,
while flying
F4U-1D Yellow FF-59 downed a D4Y “Judy” and on August 5, 1945 he shot down a
P1Y “Frances adding to the
6 Japanese aircraft he previously destroyed while flying an F4F while with VMF-121.
