On 6
September 1976 a Soviet pilot defected in a MiG-25 and Japanese radar lost the
target because he flew at
a very low altitude. This worried the JASDF so between 1983 and 1994 Japan obtained thirteen Northrop
Grumman E-2C Hawkeye aircraft.
The aircraft were assigned to the 601 Hikotai “Batmen” based
at Misawa AB, Honshu Island. Up until 1998 when the E-767 was added to their inventory
the E-2C was the only AEW type of aircraft possessed by the JASDF. Japan has ordered the
newer E-2D.
