News broke on
Friday that the Collings Foundation, Massachusetts, USA, has acquired The
Fighter Collection’s Curtiss P-40B Warhawk, an airworthy veteran of the 7
December 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour. Elliott Marsh reports for
GAR.
Curtiss P-40B Warhawk G-CDWH has been a regular participant
at IWM Duxford Air Shows since 2008, appearing intermittently at other British
and European airshows over the last five years. The P-40B was
manufactured at the Curtiss factory in Buffalo, New York, rolling off the
production line in 1941 with build number 41-13297.
It entered
service with the US Army Air Corps in April 1941, operated by the 19th Pursuit
Squadron of the 18th Pursuit Group. The Warhawk was based at Wheeler
Field, Hawaii, and was hangared undergoing maintenance when the Japanese
launched their surprise attack on Pearl Harbour on 7 December 1941, 72 years
ago today.
