Shuttle's Report - Duxford 18/12/2012

A final couple of pictures from yesterdays visit. The HAC Nimrod was having an engine run and the Ju-52 was out in the winter sun. 'Sally B' was having more work done as part of her winter maintenance.

It has been a good year with some excellent airshows and anyone visiting at the moment will see a lot of the Lambeth Road collection in hangers 3,4 and 5.

Obviously there has been the loss of some of the airframes as part of the need to create more space for the aircraft that will remain from London and hopefully some other new exhibits.

The return of 'SNAFU' to the skies plus the fantastic Vampire and Harrier restorations are some of the highlights for me.

RAF BBMF Spitfire XVI flies after 58 years!!!

Supermarine Spitfire XVI TE311 made its first flight for 58 years at RAF Coningsby, Lincolnshire, on the afternoon of October 29. The fighter has been rebuilt to airworthy standard by the dedicated engineers on the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight over the last 12 years.

The addition of a Mk XVI to the RAF BBMF fleet is particularly appropriate, the Flight having operated three examples of the type in its early days. All three of those aircraft are now in the United States.

The machine has been painted up in the codes 4D-V, as worn on Mk XVI TB675 while flown by Sqn Ldr Tony Reeves DFC, the CO of 74 Sqn, from March-May 1945.

F-14A TOMCAT U.S.NAVY VF-1 WOLFPACK NE100 1991

It would seem that the VF-1 Wolfpack F-14A Tomcat is back on the cards. It's up on the Century Wings website as available to order. This was a highly anticipated model when it was first mooted so hopefully it comes to fruition this time round.

Final product photos, HA7906, F4B-4 VF-10M.

Hobby Master 1/48 Air Power Series, HA7906, F4B-4 BuNo. 9016, VF-10M, MCAS Quantico VA, 1933.

On September 1, 1925 VF-3M was commissioned but on July 1, 1927 it was re-designated VF-10M. One year later the unit was re-designated VF-6M only to revert to VF-10M on July 1, 1930 when their Boeing FB-5s were replaced with Curtiss F6C-4s.

In late 1932 VF-10M received the most advanced bi-plane of the time, the Boeing F4B-4. It was determined that Marine Aviation needed 2 light bombing squadrons so on July 1, 1933 VF-10M became one of them when it was re-designated VB-4M and reverted to the F4B-3.
